Title
MS Pryce C1: Devotion in the Details
Description
The Master of the Troyes Missal incorporated both archaic and contemporary iconographic details into his artwork. His choice of animated roundels may be inspired by one of his predecessors, the Bedford Master. The illustrations beginning Matins and Lauds in the Hours of the Virgin prioritize Christ's family. The miniature depicting the Last Judgment is iconographically distinct. Christ is positioned centrally on the page, balanced on each side by angels blowing trumpets, and a male and female figure kneeling in the foreground. Their inclusion would encourage both male and female readers' devotion.
